Justus Magazine Launch: Sculptural Book Forms & Signage

Sculptural Paper for the Launch Party of
Justus MagazineThree pieces:  a Pop-up concertina with images from magazine, a Double concertina and 3D SignageAll are one- off pieces made by hand.
Justus magazineis a quarterly journal that showcases the rich area of innovation andcraftsmanship in print design in Australia. Though the print industry has shrunk, some very passionate people have chosen to stay. Lindsay Smith, founder andcreative director, and Estelle Pigott, editor, are creating a community of experiencedand talented people in high end print. This includes print designers, photographers, paper engineers, illustrators, freelancers, studios, laser cutters, and other specialised craftspeople who are suppliers to the print industry.

Flipping through the 128 pages of the magazine you will seespecialty paper stocks, foils, embossing, and the use of cutting edge printingand ink technologies. There are feature articles, interviews, design trends, beautiful typography and design. Have a look at the creativity that has spilledonto these pages. If you love ink on paper, you will be glad you had alook. Many professionals in niche professionsin print embellishment are represented.

Estelle contacted me asking if I would like to be involvedwith the magazine and the launch party. As a paper engineer, I design printpromotions that are three dimensional and am interested to meet and work withother niche suppliers to the print industry. I said “Yes”. Here are some photosfrom the project. All three pieces are one-off originals.
This is the template or maquette in white paper for the piece. This stage is where the structure  and all the dimensions  are worked out.. You can see where cuts have been taped over, paper has been added, and pop-up sections have changed as it was designed.
The template or maquette is then used as a guide to score the folds and make the cuts in the black paper for the finished piece (the covers of the magazine). I rather like it at this stage as a sculptural form on its own. It reminds me of city skyscrapers.
Images and type from the first issue of the magazine are meticulously cut to fit the spaces on the pop-up concertina. They are glued down with acid free glue stick and burnished down with a bone folder. This is the first finished piece that was displayed at the opening.
This is a detail of the first piece- the concertina with pop-ups.
Working on the template or maquette is done bit by bit, designing the structure and placing the images.
Now the template or maquette is placed over the black paper and used to cut and score the paper.
Once the concertina is cut, scored and folded into shape, then the images and type are cut out to be glued on.
This is a mock-up of the structure of the second piece: a double concertina. The two colours help you see how it is built.
This is the second finished piece, made with the magazines' black cover paper, this time with the logo showing. You can see the same double concertina structure. These forms are too intricate to be made for production, but it is a pleasure to make one off pieces occasionally. All these pieces were displayed at the launch.
The launch attracted a large crowd of people, many of whom had not been to the offices before. Signage was needed to direct them. What could be more appropriate than signage in paper? A few  arrow forms were made directing people upstairs and into the area where the launch was held. This arrow showed off the logo and the rich black of the cover paper against the white walls of the stairwell. This is the third completed piece.

Pages from the magazines hung as banners above the crowd.
Visitors eagerly flipped through the pages of the first issue of Justus.
Type and images from the magazine were projected creating another kind of art. Illustrators worked in the hallway. There was a lot to see.
