The Gentle Gothics Calligraphy Class

I've always loved Blackletter, with it's solid staccato rhythm.

However, when I decided to design some greeting cards with it, I found myself seeking a gentler approach. And a quick look at historical examples revealed the family of Gothic letterforms (of which Blackletter is one) contained far less forceful versions – some are light-hearted, even whimsical. These letters don't have to be harsh. This paralleled some personal experiences (my family background is German; I'll say no more!) and I began deliberately seeking a more gentle approach – well aware this might be considered sacrilege, by some!
I tried to emphasize the gentle curves and less aggressive aspects of the hand, softening corners where appropriate. I was also seeking a “minimalist approach” – using embellishments, but keeping them to a minimum and making them natural or nature-inspired. Always seeking balance.
And so, over time, The Gentle Gothics came into being.
Used on Spanish cards...
And on Christmas cards...
And taught in a series of skillshare classes, with carefully designed worksheets to guide students through letter formation.
