BaseKit Facebook 'Presence'

BaseKit Facebook 'Presence'
Digital media identity
BaseKit is an Internet-based website design service, allowing W3C code compliant websites to be built using a Photoshop file as a design template, overlaid with various 'widgets' to perform various popular functions such as inserting text, RSS feeds, Twitter feeds and videos. The intention of the software is to allow a web designer to create a visually engaging and functional website without a detailed knowledge of CSS or other code languages.

The brief was to establish a presence and identity on social networking site Facebook in order to help grow sales and positively effect SEO. The site-within-site page should mirror the current BaseKit website with regards to content and function, yet be able to stand alone without the need for more user journeys.

The project started by looking into the psychology of a user selecting the 'Like' button. Put simply, The 'Like' button is a feature that allows users to acknowledge their friends’ items. Facebook recently released statistics saying over 65 million users “like” things daily, but what really drives people to use the “like” button? The most common reason is to show positive feedback for the update. Showing approval, encouragement, engaging in the sarcasm presented in an update, or proving a point are all reasons to “like” an update, whatever it may be. For a company with a presence on Facebook seeking more exposure, this feature can be a powerful tool in helping your fans list grow.

This meant that the Landing Page, in order for the rest of the company page to receive positive attention, should have a likeable/amusing element to it to generate interest. The original design, as shown below, involved incorporating the USP of the company and combining it with humour. Although liked by the company and its Marketing Department, it was rejected in favour of the version which appears below it. Which was seen as a much safer route to take....but I've always had this feeling that if design is safe then it's a waste....like being hungry and filling yourself up with something tasteless but filling, you had an opportunity to do something with it and satisfy a need with something measured and yet you chose the easy route. So I'm showing off both versions here, the way it was originally intended to be, and the way it is.
