STYLISH APARTMENT
FOR A WHEELCHAIR USER
/2015
The assignment was to design an sheltered housing apartment for a person with disability. My fictitious client is a 33-year old man who uses a wheelchair but is otherwise fully functional. He lives with her girlfriend who doesn't have disabilities.
Moodboard was created to reflect their style. It worked as a guideline for the aesthetics of the design.
The apartment is designed into an actual existing old building Wanha Walimo in Lahti, Finland which currently houses an office.
All the text parts in the photos above are unfortunately only in Finnish.
In my opinion a lot of the solutions for disabled are unaesthetic and plain ugly. My aim was to try to create an interior which is stylish with luxurious materials and details yet still serving the needs of a wheelchair user. A space which doesn't look like a typical sheltered housing for disabled.
The solutions: The kitchen has an electrically adjustable white carrara marble counter, doors slide open with push of a button, bathroom counter enables the wheelchair to slide under, accessible handrails as well as other accessories like toilet paper dispenser, shower head etc. are brass color to allow more luxurious look, bed and sofa are easy to access without ends, rug is thin to allow the wheelchair to roll smoothly and the overall dimensioning of the apartment is loose allowing the wheelchair user to move freely.
