As part of the ten-week summer 2015 Design / Build Studio at the NC State University College of Design, architecture and landscape architecture students worked as a team to design and then build a wild carnivore animal husbandry facility for the Zoological Teaching Animal Unit (ZTAU) at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students in the ZTAU program collaborated with the programming and construction aspects of the project.

The conceptual design centers on a "Wolftrot" scheme, where the smaller prep room and the larger examination / teaching room flank a central breezeway, or "trot." A post-and-beam structural system supports a roof made of tongue-and-groove decking reclaimed from an abandoned tobacco warehouse. A band of cypress windows with operable sliders wraps the building to create a strong connection with the facility's natural, wooded site. Cross-bracing cables provide lateral support to allow for the ample fenestration. Polygal above acts as a clerestory to bring in more diffuse natural light. A band of vertical walnut siding, reclaimed from the floorboards of a house, provide a rustic language to accent the exposed posts.

My role in the project included: schematic design, design development, construction document set / submittal, general construction on-site, window design / fabrication, door design / fabrication, documentation book creation.
