Illustrations of Molecular Biology

In the spring of 2015 the old biology library at the University of Oslo was renovated and turned in the study rooms and lecture areas for the students of the Institute of Biology. For this occassion I illustrated three glass walls, together 16 meters long and almost 2 meters tall. The three walls represent molecular biology, and illustrates the three main processes involving DNA; DNA replication, transcription and translation. The drawings are made with pencil and printed on foil. The focus has been on correct scientific presentation and composition on the walls.

The first wall shows an eucaryotic animal cell, and the DNA replication that happens within the nucleus. One mother strand, with help from several proteins, is replicated to become two daughter strands.

The second wall shows the process of transcription that happens within the nucleus as well, where copies of the DNA strand is made, and the parts with genes that code for functioning proteins are processed. This then travels out from the nucleus and into the cytoplasma.

The third wall shows translation, the protein synthesis, where the copy of DNA is read to build the correct protein by combining the correct amino acids.
