Celebratory British Stamp Collection

Whilst at University we had an external brief where individuals from the design industry came in and assigned us a project. They gave us three projects to which we could pick one to do. I decided to do two of these projects... This being one of them.

For this project we were asked to create a range of stamps to celebrate Britishness.

After extensive research in to the world of stamps I decided on the subject I wanted to base my stamps on.

"Unusual & Unknown British Laws"

You cannot gamble
in a library

Pregnant women can pee
anywhere they want.
Even in a police mans
hat if they require

You cannot operate a
cow whilst intoxicated

You are not allowed
to be drunk in a pub

You cannot ride in a
taxi if you have the plague

You are not allowed to
 let your pet mate
with any pet from the
Royal House

After absorbing myself in these facts I decided to create illustrations on stamps to comminucate the story.

As part of the project I decided to create a presentation booklet for the stamps. I went with the whole idea of making an official looking Law book that would be found within a court room. I re-designed the Royal Coat of Arms to make it relevent to my project. I then had this gold foil blocked on to a leather book. The stamps were the presented inside the book

Here are the stamp illustrations that I have created to Celebrate Britishness.
As part of the project and for my end of year degree show I decided to get these printed in a larer format so that people can see the illustrations in greater detail. After meeting with a paper specialist I discovered a paper that official documents are often printed on. I had this in different weights for the large format pieces and for the smaller stamps I had printed for inside the presentation booklet. I made the decision to do this because I believe that it deepens the story and gives a reason behind why I have used the materials that I have.
I decided to create a display of envelopes to reveal how the stamps would actually look should they be used in 'real life'.
All of the stamps are displayed on seperate pages and all have the law that they represent printed above them.
I had the Laws I chose to illustrate gold foil blocked on the back of my book so that people could relate the stamps inside to the individual laws. This book is very professionally made and has the "important" feel that it should.
Final Shot
I took this photograph of my stamp book, envelopes and gavel as the final shot for this project. The gavel helps to enforce the whole idea of this being a Law book and set the scene that it could be seen in a court room.
