THE NOTHING PROJECT

NOTHING

PROJECT OUTLINE

"Everything is nothing; nothing is everything."

For this project, I had decided on the topic of Nothing. Nothing is project done from 2014 - 2015, as part of an Extended Studies module for a school submission in University of West of England. While coming up with a project title, I had thought, I have nothing to do, so what if I did nothing? What started out as a joke initially, became a really interesting topic to explore. This quote has always been something I had thought about. So I started questioning the idea of nothingness.

Based on scientific studies, there will never be nothing, although scientists believe that the world came from nothing, they go on to explain what “nothing” is, and in turn it becomes something. And also because in that certain void, space or emptiness, there will always be atoms, air, energy, force and much more. Whether it exist or not, it is still an on-going debate.

My aim is to find out if “nothing” really exists. Is there really nothing, or is there something that remains even though there is nothing? Because, being a designer, I am fascinated by the fact that we can always create something out of nothing.

At the same time, I want to bring out the positivity in people, turning the negative into positive. People tend to associate nothingness with negativity. However, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. What is nothing to someone can be everything to another.

A THING OUT OF NOTHING

ABOUT

For this task, I decided to find out what “nothing” is, and also find out what others thought “nothing” is and what was their point of view of it. At the same time, to find out something out of nothing.

SAY NOTHING

ABOUT

People are afraid to speak out. And with the censorship in Singapore, it is even harder for people to say whatever they want to freely. Instead of saying it out loud, the aim of this task is to get people to write down things they have nothing to say about, things that they really want to say but couldn’t, due to personal, family, government or censorship constrains, both on paper and on the internet.

After going around speaking to people, many of them were reluctant to even write down what they wanted to say. Most of them had nothing to say or even write. However, people were open, bolder, and honest on the internet and more answers came in due to the anonymity.

DO NOTHING

ABOUT

The objective was to take videos of people doing nothing at all for two minutes, observe their body language, and get to know what they are thinking about during the process of doing nothing. Doing is still a thing, so doing nothing doesn’t mean they are not doing anything at all.

NOTHING
(Final project)

ABOUT

Nothing is project, which is series of seven items, see, hear, smell, taste, do, expect and have nothing. Every single item in this project represents the different senses, in which expresses the many different forms of nothingness.

This series is a compilation of several commonplace items that we see all around us every day, such as water bottle, perfume, iPod etc. They have always been a part of our lives, yet insignificant to us.

The target audience is the working class, where in this generation, we are in a fast-paced environment and we are moving at a speed where we do not even stop to think for a minute of two. Hence, the existences of all these items are always ignored. Referring back to the previous task of Do Nothing, people do not even have two minutes to spare just for themselves.

This project hopes to get people to stop and think about everything that is around them. At the same time, appreciate all the little things in life, which everyone has always taken for granted.

TYPEFACE

The typeface used in this project is Hevetica. In 1957, Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann set out to create a neutral typeface that had great clarity, no intrinsic meaning in its form. It is a widely used sans-serif typeface, due to the extent of its visibility and influence, it is now known as the “Invisible Typeface”.

Just like this project, everything is so commonly used to the extent where people do not see them as anything significant anymore.
