Transformation of vacant structure, Eastside of Heerlen city, the Netherlands, 2015.

A design project for the redevelopment of a vacant hotel building in the center of Heerlen. Heerlen is located in a declining region where the average age increases and the population decreases. To keep the city young and vibrant, the opportunity, generated by the growing number of students who leave home to live in the city where they are studying, should be taken. The existing premises is currently on the list to be demolished. As a designer, I believe that the casco structure has the potential to function as student accomodation. By doing smart additions to the concrete frame, the building will be compatible with the new target group “students”.

This is the strategy for the transformation of the former hotel into student housing: First, the closed masonry facades are removed from the casco frame. The skin is peeled from its skeleton, so only the raw structure remains. Then three modules are added:
1. collective workshop and exhibition space
2. collective residential tower (living volume)
3 student bar, stage and gym.
