Water carafe and glasses

Bachelor project
May 2015

Water carafe is dedicated for serving tap water in restaurants and cafes. Filters can be put in the carafe to purify the water and improve its taste.
The idea for a project came from a research, which showed that only 12% people in Poland drink tap water regularly, most of them being skeptical about its purity and taste and remembering its low quality in the recent times. Although the quality of water is exceptionally good now, many people remain unconvinced and it’s still uncommon to serve tap water in a restaurant.
I created 2 types of filters, which engage users in water purification and make the process clear and understandable.
First one is charcoal, material traditionally used for water purification, which adsorbs chlorine and unpleasant smells.
Second one is a porous ceramic material impregnated with silver nitrate. The ceramic filter was created thanks to information I received from University of Virginia, where the material was invented and tested. A project called Madi Drop is a ceramic tablet, which can be simply dropped in a water container and it purifies the water by releasing silver ions at a controlled rate. (for more information see: puremadi.org).
The filters can be easily placed and removed from a carafe, enabling its cleaning and using at a restaurant.
