This year will be the very last ‘final end of year show’ for the HND Graphics course here at the University of Salford and it is seen very much as an ‘end of an era’ for the teaching team. The final HND Year 2 group comprises of 32 students, who come from a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and different parts of the country, and throughout the course they have taken on a selection of modules and the exercises contained within. The aim of these to broaden their skills base and to meet the outcomes required, and to help them meet diverse challenges ahead in the next 2 years, all this at a time where both Education and the Economy are going through a significant change, a level of changes not seen in the UK since the early 80’s.

At the beginning of the academic year in September 2010, and through both the semesters to May 2011, the group has focused their skills under the guidance of the teaching team. As part of this initiative the group under their own nominated team leaders, created a functioning body to design critique and apply their own Branding and Identity. Apply this identity to their own website, create their own profiles, and set up a pattern of networking with local organisations in the Greater Manchester through the University area and beyond, making contacts within social and business networks like LinkedIn.

Their website is designed by Student Martin Pearson is the following:

A number of the students will be moving on to either further University at Salford study, opting for BA Graphics, Digital Media, Advertising, or Design Futures. If not at Salford then either further study elsewhere in the UK or seeking their fortune out in industry.

The examples of work selected are from the final taught module ‘Image making and Typography’. The graphics shown are from students Whitney Sherratt (Diesel Type Poster) Ashley Wakefield (Origami Life) Samantha Griffiths (He’s a Wallflower) Martin Pearson (The Clash) Chris Woolley (Global Warming) and Rory Edwards (From Her to Eternity).

In conclusion this is an end of an era, but in many other ways, for these students it is the beginning of the rest of their careers. On behalf of the Teaching Team we wish them well, good luck and good fortune in all they undertake in the future.

The first 6 examples are the posters featured in the Creative Times article and are examples of the specialist modules I teach of Typography and image Making/Photomontage. The remainder are selected from the Academic 2nd Year September 2010 to June 2011, the very final year of the HND course at University of Salford.
