The View From Within

The View From Within

A tripartite collection of anamorphic paintings that are radially distorted so that the original form can be viewed in the reflection of a cylindrical mirror.

Each radial illustration simulates an enclosed microcosm, a small planet of wonder to be explored. This reflects the experience of being immersed in a place for the first time – it almost feels as though one has been transported to another world. Despite the common knowledge that each landscape starts and eventually ends somewhere, the feeling one gets when immersed in an environment is that it could continue forever. Such sceneries are in constant states of flux and evolution and thus have a transformative nature that the anamorphic experience can be used to convey. The audience will need to walk around each drawing to view the full circumference of the cylinder and thereby interact with the work in a way that suggests taking a walk around the site. The drawings have no prerequisite viewing position, so the audience can view them from any side of the drawing, with the optimal viewing distance to be determined by personal preference.
