A Year in the Saddle

A Year in the Saddle
This is a project looking at data collected in 2014 about cycling. I had collated over 3000 pieces of data and challenged myself to design a report that displays it in a meaningful way with the hope to inspire others to look at how they can use data in there lives.

Users
Anyone who has the slightest interest in cycling, or does not, as this should influence peoples view on the subjects.

Design decisions
Format was the first decisions I had to make, whether it would be printed or digital. Digital enables more interaction and more complex data with different levels, but I felt printed enabled people to experience a journey as they looked through the report and would gain more from it.
Colour and typography were key to making the data understandable and usable so I needed to make sure that was all correct and couldn't mislead anyone. I assinged a colour for the secondary data sources, so when comparing them it became much easier to understand the content on the page.

Summary
Multiple challenges were encountered, but this was anticipated. I'm happy with the outcome, as I feel its a unique approach to this kind of data.
The cover was made using inner tubes I collected throughout the year. Manufactures names of the tubes appear subtly on the back cover.
The introduction introduces readers to the reason why I cycle and how collecting data can affect them.
Data Overivew is a rough outline of data collected throughout the year. A figure also appears by each title to signift who the data is about.
Over 700 places were visited in 2014, the list orders them by county.
Mike and Paul use the same style of imagery as me and are assigned a colour which helps identify there data in the later pages.
The ten most notable people I rode with were analysed. There were many more people, but to start recording my riding habits with someone I had to have a meaningful conversation with them whilst cycling.
