The Guardian - Grayson Perry

The Guardian: Do Something Magazine
Grayson Perry Gets Dirty.

Editorial illustration for The Guardian for their Do Something magazine feature of English artist CBE, Grayson Perry on mountain biking. The brief was to deliver two illustrations and one animation. The front cover illustration was created using squid ink, watercolour, pencil and pen and composited together as seperate layers inside of Photoshop so that it may be animated as seperate layers for the reveal. The inside illustration was a mixture of photo illustration, photography and some ink splashes. The ink blots, splashes and brush marks were created and edited to be masked files and were submitted to The Guardian to be used around the piece as part of the editorial design and for coherance through out the feature.

Was a great project to be a part of and allowed me to try out some new skills in After Effects with depth and establishing a paralax between foreground elemtents the background using 3D functions in After Effects. Huge thanks to Chris, Ellen and Lora who directed this work and were gracious in allowing lots of creative freedom!

It was decided that we would continue with a fully illustrated cover of Grayson on the mountain bike and the inside illustration be a mixture of illustration and photograph, the challenge was to make the piece look dynamic enough where grayson apeared to be moving but also ensure details were clearly illustrated. The red marks were to indicate to the team where the direction of ink splashes would be directed.
