Ghana, West Africa - Black & White

In 2011 I was part of a 30 day excursion in West Africa toward the end of my years at University. We spent 20 days traveling all across Ghana soaking up heterogeneous motifs of traditional African culture juxtapozed with modernization and democratization. I took my mother's Pentax K1000 with me and shot 13 rolls of black and white film. This was my first major photo story with a camera and though the mechanical Pentax was a challenge to get used to, I really loved the feel of making these photos. My theme, being a white man in a black world, was black and white. I kept every photo including the grainy duds at the beginning and end of each roll because my objective was not exclusively to make photos but to illustrate a time of pure transience. The final exhibit was every photo displayed as a collage in the shape of the African continent.
