P.L. Travers "Mary Poppins"

P.L. Travers "Mary Poppins", illustrations Marta Zuravskaja

This book became very important to me. How many times did I read it? I read it when I was 7, 15, 23, 25, 31 years old… Every time when I attentively read each page I notice new details and meanings. For me the story about Mary Poppins is full of magic. All the characters are unique and ambiguous. All of them are like common people in real life. They are good and bad, cheerful and sad; their benevolence depends on the situation and mood. Mary Poppins is kind and understanding, but strict and stern at the same time.
A traditional interpretation of the book is a story for kids about children and their nanny, but as more I read it I realize, that Pamela Travers put much more meaning in characters, situations, and description. And when I read it at the age of 31 I can feel that this book is full of allegories and implication. Some chapters are really scary and mysterious, that’s why I decided to create black and white illustrations, using paper and ink.
I try to do my best to create relevant illustrations for this genius story of Pamela Travers and hope to find a publisher for these illustrations.
