I followed the tutorial in Down and Dirty Tricks for Designers volume II in chapter 3. I wanted to add my own touch by finding a different metallic background and rounded rectangle. And off Duke basketballs big win tonight I chose to use them for my inspiration for this piece.

Step 1-create the perforated background by opening a new document 2" x 2" at 150ppi. Use the Elliptical marquee tool to make a 1" circle in the top left quadrant of the square document.

Step 2-click create a new layer icon and press shift+backspace to open the fill dialog. select black and click ok. click the circle and drag to the bottom right quadrant to create a second circle and fill with black.

Step 3-press and hold ctrl and click on the layer thumbnail. turn off the eye icon next to the background layer. go to the select menu and choose Inverse which flips the selection area around.

Step 4-create another layer and press shift+baackspace. chooose 50% gray this time and click ok. go to edit and choose Define Pattern, name your pattern and click ok.

Step 5-create a new document ctrl+ N measuring 1800 x 1200 pixels at 150ppi. set background layer to black and create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray.

Step 6-now we add a layer style and choose Pattern Overlay. locate the new pattern in the pattern drop down. scale down to 20%. In the styles to the left click blending options:custom and change the fill opacity to 0% to show the pattern.

Step 7-right click on the layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Step 8-I then googled metal textures and found one i liked, the round swirls reminded me of a basketball which matched well with my topic. I saved this image as a pattern in photoshop.

Step 9-back to the design file, add another Pattern Overlay and choose the new metal pattern. Set the blend mode to overlay and scale to 150%.

Step 10-In the styles click gradient Overlay and set the blend mode to Multiply, choose your angle for lighting and scale to 150%.

Step 11-in your top layer add a rounded rectangle that fits whatever you plan to type inside. I set the radius to 25 px. copy the fx from the previous layer by holding alt and clicking the fx icon and dragging it to the new layer. This adds all effects of the last layer to the new layer.

Step 12-in the new layer under bevel and emboss, unclick texture, go back to bevel and emboss. change technique to chisel hard and size to 10px. click Drop Shadow and click the screen to create the desired anggle of the shadow. in the structure change the size to 35px

Step 13-Time to type in Duke. use the type tool and click in the middle of the rectangle and type DUKE. move your text to the desired position, i wanted mines to be centered.

Step 14-copy the fx from the previous layer to this layer with the text. double click the layer and under blend mode choose soft light and choose a royal blue. click fx and click bevel and emboss. under structure change the style to Outer Bevel and the technique to Smooth, depth to 300%, size to 20px. change angle to 35 and altitude to 48. under contour click the drop down arrow and choose the first option on the left bottom row and reduce the range to 50%.
