Festival De Basis

'De Basis' is a new festival, on a (former) forbidden area: The abandoned airbase of Soesterberg. This place has not always been accessible in the past, which makes the area filled with raw concrete and integral nature a wondrous place to be.

The reserved broad plains, small forests and a 3km long airstrip make this area a challenge to brand for this festival about art, culture and nature. A smart and seemingly simple solution is found in the creation of a new typeface, available in a regular and stencil version. Inspired on the old numbers found alongside the airstrip, the font's design carries the sturdy, coarse and technical feel of the airbase and fighter planes. The stencil version gives possibility to a fast reproduction in wayfinding and signing.

It is also a surreal place, as everything found on the airbase is made for flying, but no planes are visible. By capturing talented freerunners whilst jumping, these 'flying humans' give a new found connection to the airstrip, hangars, shelters, watchtowers and flight control systems. A stunning film is shot by Erik Lichtendonk, whilst shooting the pictures of the festival campaign.
