Multilayered Rectangles

This is the thumbnail I doodled which was the inspiration for this project.
The first step was a scale drawing.  This piece will be 9" wide by 5" high and 1" thick to allow it to be free standing and cast colored shadows.  I may put a slight curve in the piece to give it a sturdier foot.

The next step was to mock up some colors using a lightbox, colored pencils and transparent paper.  The pencils don't match my glass exactly, but gives me an idea if I am heading in the direction I want for the color theme.
Next was to mock this up in Illustrator, so I have a template for each glass layer.  I set the fill colors to 30% opacity to simulate the tranparency of the glass.
Here are all of the Illustrator layers broken out.  I will have a total of 8 layers for a 1 inch thick piece.  The first layer, which is a solid clear piece is not noted below.
Here is all 8 layers of glass layed out.  Note that the orange and red are strikers, so they will darken in the kiln.  The red in particular is transparent below.

The colors I settled on are (all Bullseye Glass)
1025 - Light Orange Transparent
1116 - Turquoise Blue Transparent
1442 - Neo-Lavender Shift Tranparent
1824 - Ruby Red Tint
and of course lots of 1100 Clear

Here are all 8 layers stacked up as they will be in the kiln.
Here's all the layers stacked in the kiln ready to go.  I'm experimenting with fusing all 8 layers at once.  I'm running a long soak at 1250 degrees to try and avoid any major bubbles.  Plus the 30 minutes at 1500 degrees to ensure all the colors strike.

It came out of the kiln fine.  I used the tile saw to straighten up the edges and now it's going back into the kiln for a final fire polish to remove the abrasion marks on the edges.  Fire polish is 150 degrees per hour to 1275 for 15 minutes.

My goal is to create a freestanding block of glass that casts interesting colored shadows of light. Due to the precise cutting required, I perfor Read More
