Although dental implants are not natural teeth, they still require attentive care to remain in good shape. Growth of bacteria leaves recipients vulnerable to a condition known as peri-implant disease, an infection that can develop around the implant itself. As is the case with natural teeth, regular brushing and flossing help to eliminate infection-causing bacteria.

Experts recommend that implant patients choose a low-abrasion toothpaste. In addition, they advise avoiding toothpastes with sodium fluoride and stannous fluoride as well as those containing stain removers or baking soda. Evidence suggests that any soft toothbrush is appropriate for cleaning implants, although patients may need an interdental brush or implant floss to care for the area immediately surrounding the implant. Use of a Waterpik Water Flosser may also help maintain optimal gum health. Finally, individuals with implants will need to regularly visit their dentist, who will evaluate their gum health while also checking the security of the implants and the health of surrounding bone.
