Benefits of Ceramic Zirconia Implants

As a holistic dental practitioner, Dr. Azadeh (Amy) Khajavi performs all procedures using biocompatible and nonmetallic materials. Dr. Azadeh Khajavi teaches at the Ceramic Implant Institute, where she helps dental practitioners to learn the skills necessary to work with ceramic zirconia implants.

In a traditional dental implant procedure, the patient receives a titanium post that, when introduced to the jaw, encourages bone to grow around it and provides structural stability. An artificial tooth placed atop the introduced post then functions like a natural tooth, thus allowing the patient to chew and speak naturally.

Ceramic zirconia implants provide the same benefits as traditional titanium implants but without many of the risks of metal and with improved aesthetic results. The white color of a ceramic implant mimics that of a patient's natural tooth root and as a result does not pose the risk of the titanium post showing through the gum line, which may occur in patients with receding gum tissues.

Zirconia also eliminates the risk of corrosion that can cause bone loss in patients with titanium implants. In addition, the material is naturally compatible with human body chemistry, which means that patients with autoimmune disease or sensitivities to metal can receive a zirconia implant more safely than a traditional titanium post.

Furthermore, because ceramic zirconia implants combine the post and the artificial tooth into a single piece, they eliminate the risk of bacteria growth between the two elements. The single-piece design also makes the implant procedure easier for a dentist to perform and requires fewer office visits for the patient.
