Cullen Payne Architects were invited to form part of a design team to submit a proposal for the provision of three new operating theatres in Cork City’s SIVUH.
The unsual site chosen by the hospital had a 40 foot level difference between it and the hospital facilities which it was to serve. A previous attempt by the hospital to build a facility here had run out of funding leaving behind a concrete raft foundation, a skeleton of steel superstructure and a two storey section of prefabricated wall panels which were to be incorporated into any new proposal.
CPA proposed a scheme which proped a bar of operaing theatres on a service core which incorporated the pre-existing structure.
