Loughrea Community Nursing Unit
Loughrea, County Galway
Loughrea, County Galway
100 bed retirement home in rural Galway.
All five of the Community Nursing Units built by Cullen Payne Architects were based on a standardized bedroom type, details and prefabricated construction systems.
In contrast to unit at Inchicore’s urban site, the rural lakeside location in the grounds of the nineteenth century workhouse in Loughrea afforded us the opportunity to exploit the views southward across the lake in designing the communal spaces, both internally in the case of the day rooms and externally in the therapy gardens.
Two identical L-shaped residential wings enclose the first therapy garden while the eastern boundary of the second garden is formed by the single storey day care and physiotherapy centre.
