Self Portrait Series (5/5)

These drawings are the fourth installment of a five-week exploration of self-portraiture focusing on the variety of compressed charcoal as a medium. This week's drawings were done focused on the act of drawing – using the body to draw a line in space and recording it with charcoal on paper.

I started with a 60 ft. long drawing and walked backwards while drawing a line with both hands simultaneously, repeating this action five times to produce ten lines. I then replicated the process, but in different forms. I used a 6 ft. long drawing and walked backwards from one side of the paper to the other until the distance was equivalent to 60 ft. This produced 10 lines that were layered 10 times, indicating how many times I walked in order to make the drawing. Impressions of my feet are left on the paper, marking my paces and further emphasizing the action of making the drawing.
