Double Dutch rules Red Dot Product Design

Dutch designer Frans Schrofer and Dutch manufacturer Leolux win the international Red Dot Product Design Award for the armchair Caruzzo. < link to film: From Paper to Prototype: The Making of the Caruzzo. The Red Dot Award is one of the most coveted design prizes in the world, given by an international jury for innovation, functionality, and craftsmanship. This is the first Red Dot for Frans Schrofer and culminates his 20 years of creative collaboration with the Dutch market leader Leolux.

“My designs are not for the faint-hearted,” Schrofer emphasizes. The Dutchman employs the latest 3D computer techniques to create daring and evocative shapes. Schrofer: “It seems to me that the language of form evolves faster than language itself. You understand the attitude without saying a word. Technological developments in 3D moulding allow me to push the limits and approach design like a sculptor to achieve an incredible plasticity. That’s how I’m able to communicate this sense of edginess.”

Innovative Craftsmanship

Schrofer’s Caruzzo has a strong back and angular shoulders, expressing a bold self-confidence. From the front, the Caruzzo is a woman with creamy white skin and a defenseless navel. From the back, she’s a predator, svelte and muscular. The Caruzzo is an animal that Schrofer’s 3D savvy and Leolux’s expert hands could create. The chair’s high back is detailed with unique hand-stitch and shaped to provide both sublime comfort and privacy. The armchair is available in a variety of upholstery combinations: contrast or matching leather shell/seating or uniform fabric. The five star aluminum swivel base allows a change of perspective and a repose position can be activated with a cantle mechanism. For ultimate comfort, a specially designed ottoman can accompany the Caruzzo.
