In 1928, exactly 90 years ago, Jan Schröfer developed the Cirkel chair which led to the establishment of the Cirkel Groep, one of the most innovative furniture companies in The Netherlands.  Unbeknownst to many, he was the initiator and engineering genius behind the famous Revolt chair by Friso Kramer.  Historians have compared Jan Schröfer to Andriano Olivetti of the enlightened typewriter manufacturer and Cees van der Leeuw of the Van Nelle coffee, tea, and tobacco manufacturing company.  Jan Schröfer's integrity and innovative spirit lives on in the Schrofer family. 

120 years ago this year, marks the birth of Willem Schrofer, (brother to Jan), who indulged in the fine arts as his mode of self-expression. He was a beloved teacher at the Royal Academy of Art, and a researcher and experimenter in many styles. During his career he befriended many modern art greats like Moholy-Nagy, El Lissitzky, Piet Mondriaan and Paul Klee. Through those friendships, Willem came to understand the communist ideologies that became the foundation of the Constructivist and Bauhaus movements.  He understood all, but partook in none, he remained a true non-conformist.
