Form follows function is a principle associated with modern architectureand industrial design in the 20th Century, which states that the shape of abuilding or object should be predicated by or based upon its intended functionor purpose. Similarly, typefaces today have a purpose – for display, digitalmedia, decorative or even corporate communications. These purposes define the“form” of the typeface.
This project is the documentation of experiments thatare conducted based on existing forms (in nature or the like) that inspire anew typeform. The book records the ideation processes and the rationalisation behind creating the new typeface along with some background about the Form follows function theory and the influence of Swiss designer Wim Crouwel on typography.
