Tourism hires new director

The tourism commission held a special called meeting yesterday,
September 2 to hire a new Executive Director. Tia Campbell, from
Martin County has a background in broadcast media with previous radio
experience. She has done everything from being an on-air talent to
working with the marketing side of radio. Campbell recently worked for
Gearheart Media, as a Sales Executive and Program Director.
She is excited to start something new. “I cannot wait to start work,
Campbell said.
She has been scouting out local area tourist attractions around
Johnson County. She has also been able to  spend time walking,
running, and jogging on the Dawkins Trail. “There is so much here that
is still to be developed, and there are so many people willing to see
it grow,” Campbell said. She hopes to plan more activities and ways to
find other ways to draw people to this area. “Maybe implement some new
things that will bring more tourists here,” she added. Also, she hopes
that “the people who already live here find it to be more pleasant,
with lots of more things to do, and be proud of where they are from,”
she added.
Campbell has not previously worked in a tourism setting. She came
around Christmastime last year to film for Gearheart Media and worked
with the Paintsville Tourism for Shop Local.  She was able to visit
and take pictures and film the Country Music Highway Museum and local
antique shops. This segment showcases ways to support local
businesses. “They have so many antique shops, and I got to go in and
film it, and also narrate what all you can find if you shop local in
Paintsville,” Campbell stated.
This gave Campbell a hint of what it was like to work in this field.
“So I did get a small taste of what it was like to be in tourism,”
Campbell added.
She hopes to see a progression of Paintsville over time. She plans on
commuting from Banner while taking on this new task. Campbell will
step into the new position of the Executive Tourism Director next week
with a salary of “$40,000/year,” Chairman Todd Meade said. Committee
members, Lyda Ward and Chet Crace were not able to attend this
meeting.
