British Typographers' Guild

The rebranding and relaunch of the ISTD, into its original name: the British Typographers' Guild (BTG). Founded in 1928 by Vincent Steer, the organisation outlines and maintains the highest typographic standards. The brief set out to produce a new logotype for the guild, as well as create the first edition of an annual publication from the BTG.

British Typographers' Guild – Identity
The bars that feature in the logo mimic the forms of leading from traditional letterpress, with each block  representing a period of time in which the guild has served under its different names. Originally the guild was BTG for 25 years, then STD for 46 years, ISTD for 15 years, and now (as purpose of the brief) returns to the BTG in 2014. These bars are also proportional to the spacing of an En-space, Em-space, Agate, and Middle space in typography. This created a new identity that has a duel meaning.

STEER Typographic Journal
Named in homage to the original founder Vincent Steer, the new typographic journal stylised as 'STEER', aims to steer readers in the right direction typographically. The name also refers to the change in direction that the guild are taking. As the 'commissioned designer' in theory I envisioned that each issue of STEER would be a collaboration between that of a graphic designer and someone from another creative field, such as art, fashion, music etc. Bringing a new dimension to the typical typographic journal.

For this issue, the theoretical collaboration would have been with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who creates giant polkadot installations. I made typographers tools in her artistic style to represent this collaboration, which feature as the imagery throughout the publication.

STEER no.1 – The Points and Pica Issue
Each issue would be delivered in a clear envelope to reveal the artistic cover.
