The Frost-Giant's Daughter – Robert E. Howard

Editorial
A limited edition publication for ‘The Frost-Giant’s Daughter’ by Robert E. Howard.

This publication is based around the theme of temperature due to numerous references in the story. From the descriptive text, to the setting of the actual story, temperature was a present theme throughout. Researching into this concept led us to discover thermo-chromic ink, which we instantly wanted to include in our publication.

Using the thermo-chromic ink which changes from black to colourless at 27 degrees (body temperature), we decided to restrict it to a feature showcase spread at the end linking with Conan's blackout. Allowing the reader to interact with the story, revealing a double page image. The photography illustrating the story is ice with materials frozen within. The materials included were, iridescent paper, ink and foil. Some of the photography especially the ones that were of ice and iridescent paper fitted as a visual representation of some parts of the story.

Using Adobe Caslon Pro in a mixture of warm to cool grey tones, representing the speech with italics to highlight certain parts of the text and colour emphasising key aspects.

A liquid crystal belly band was fitted onto the book to enable to reader to interact with the thermo elements by having to take the belly band off to read the story. Finally de-bossing the front cover and lid of box to tie in with the limited edition nature of the publication.
