Project Scope: Wonderland is an interactive retail store and destination spot for children, located in the Galleria Mall in St. Louis, Missouri. The underlying concept of the design is a labyrinth; in correlation with the maze of exploits encountered by Alice in her adventure in Wonderland. The intended effect was to capture the essence of the curious and imaginative; the sensation of "spiraling down a rabbit hole."
Design Obstacles:
- Issues regarding visibility, wayfinding and egress in design of a labyrinth
- Safety issues associated with a range of young clients
- Establishment of five activity areas with various concepts- art, discovery, music, pretend and technology
Design Solutions:
- Utilization of walls of different heights, graphic navigational tools and signage and clearly marked egress paths
- Compliance with building codes and ADA standards, plus additional precautionary measures to meet the safety needs of children
- Activity areas are separate, but located according to similarity in the age of the client/ user base
