World Death Rates vs Health Spending

This was my final project for a course at NYU called Statistical Foundations of Data Visualization. In the class I learned how to use R to work with data and I also spent time exploring the graphical parameters of R. I created my final visualization by importing my R output into Adobe Illustrator, but most of the graphics styling was applied in R itself. I used Illustrator to make minor changes, style my typography and layout my visualizations in a single graphic.

The data I used came from the World Bank Database of World Development Indicators. I compared the death rate to the health expenditure in countries around the world from 1995 to 2012. I highlighted six countries in particular which have the highest or lowest mean death rate, the greatest increase or decrease in death rate, and the highest increase and highest mean in health expenditure. While I did not see a definitive relationship between death rate and health spending, I concluded that spending the most on health did not necessarily create the lowest death rate.

Note: all means referred to are linear modeled means.
