ARCHIVE | BLACKBERRY/RIM (Research in Motion) [2010]

In 2010, shortly after leaving Moment Communications I took a 3mo consulting gig at RIM/Blackberry in Kitchener/Waterloo at the Blackberry HQ. It was during the preliminary development of the Blackberry Playbook tablet, which at the time was being eagerly anticipated. The original iPad just came out while I was there. I was working with the pro video team there who were developing the 'out of box experience', startup/first launch video. I developed some concepts for the launch video, as well as pitch some new (at the time) UI gestures. We also worked to put together very early preliminary UI mockup walkthru's together to show executives and key stakeholders. All this work was done independently of the development of the OS at the time, as it was a secret about how it was being built on the QNX operating system at the time.

Ultimately all this work was essentially scraped as the project fell way behind schedule on the hardware and software side. This was my first time working on any sort of conceptual UI/UX work, which was very interesting and would later become a much bigger and valuable part of my skillset.
