La Independencia en Crecimiento

SUMMARY

La Independencia En Crecimiento (translated as Growing Independece) is the award-winning design for The Bicentennial of Independence Monument competition in Monterrey, Mexico.

The monument is a series of interlocking triangular forms which together create a spiraling column.  The form connects directly to both places of national and local history through six lines drawn over the surface of the structure and through the plaza.

The growing columnar form is a statement of pride, representing the achievements of the city´s industries and connecting with the greater history of Mexico.

Due to its unique location, high visibility and dynamic sculptural presence, it will be a new landmark for the city.

SITE

The Monument will stand in the plaza at the intersection of Morones Prieto and the end of the Zaragoza Bridge, and will be directly across from Macroplaza at the entrance to the historic Colonia Independencia.

CONSTRUCTION METHODS

La Independencia En Crecimiento will be made from materials that symbolize Monterrey: concrete, steel and glass.

These materials will directly link to the historical sites of manufacturing in Monterrey with three physical lines:

The line of steel, will continue its path toward the Parque Fundidora, site of the trailblazing steel company in Latin America, Fundidora Monterrey SA;
  The line of concrete will connect with the main plant of the global leader CEMEX, Cementos Mexicanos. S.A.B. de CV;
  The line of glass, will continue its path toward the large enterprise VITRO, SA Monterrey Window de CV;

The three lines to the south will be built in colored ceramics connecting the sculpture with the national history of México:

The white line derived from Dolores Hidalgo (city where the Independence began) represents the unity of Mexico during its history. This line has the maximum extent thus representing the best hope for keeping this unit even in the most turbulent times.
The red line connects to the Angel of Independence. Red is the color of the national heroes blood which graves are mostly at the base of this monument in Mexico City, the capital of México. It has the second dimension of length.
The green represents hope and this line extends from San Luis Potosí (city where began the Mexican Revolution). Is the line of least length and is the closest to the citizens of Monterrey.

La Independencia En Crecimiento will be built in the same plaza as the Bicentennial Building, and will be inaugurated on September 15, 2011.
