Project background
Expressionism is a revolutionary art form developed in the early 20th century. Expressionist artists wanted to release the deeper emotions which they felt lay beneath the surface of everyday life.

An extraordinary collection of expressionist works are held at Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery. A major new exhibition entitled “Expressionism: The Total Artwork” supported by the Arts Council opened in July 2014. As part of this project Paul Wyatt was commissioned to produce a series of six web films about prominent works in the collection as well as filming a number of half hour interviews with art historians and artists which can be viewed alongside the art works in the gallery space itself.

An insight into the work of Ludwig Meidner and in particular “Apocalyptic Vision” part of a series of paintings he produced in his Berlin studio during the summer of 1912. These paintings of burning cities and fleeing people, coming just before the outbreak of the First World War seemed to be an uncanny prediction of what was to come.
