I had the great chance to board an helicopter in Reykjavik to fly over the current eruption in the wild highlands of Iceland. We left the capital for a 5 hour trip over the glaciers to reach the live eruption at Holuhraun, our brand new volcano here in Iceland.
The eruption has started on the 31th of august this year by a volcanic fissure related to the volcano Barðarbunga. The lave field is now something like 60 km2.
Despite that the main crater is high enough for not having lava fountains anymore, the eruption is still ongoing and the scenery is fantastic!
A brand new part of Iceland is growing there and it shows no signs of decreasing activity...
