'Closer Than Skin' by Ed Struijlaart

Weeks before singer-songwriter Ed Struijlaart was about to release his second album, his management approached me for the design of the sleeve. First of all I wrote down a concept for the cover that I thought was appropriate.

The story behind the title (and record) is about a couple that just had a really rough time, but their relationship survived and the couple grew closer to each other...closer than skin. So I suggested to picture such a couple, showing them in love and sort of comforting each other. And I was especially determined to picture the man in the arms of the woman, instead of the other way around. Which you would normally see.

Having no budget and no time to shoot a beautiful photo, I was destined to draw the scene I suggested. To avoid a drawing that would be too much of a comic, I went wild with some ink and water. You can still find some stains on the walls of our home. But I don't care, 'cause I love the results. And I'm not the only one.

Final pen drawing
Different attempts to add ink, which I changed to color in Photoshop
More ink to use for the rest of the package, the cd label and the booklet.

If the artist says that the artwork 'totally matches the music', than I've done a good job.
