Studio project series for Advance Practices in Color and Design, spring of 2013.
This series of seven pieces is an abstract representation of myself; each composition represents a different trait. The series includes three eccentric behaviors (creative, perfectionist, sassy), three more stable qualities (honest, caring, dedicated), and one trait I have discovered at my core (uncertainty). Each piece consists of an embroidered 8x10 stretched canvas “environment” and a smaller embroidered canvas circle that embodies the trait. The relationship between the “environment” and “embodiment” could be the response of either one to the other. I decided to use embroidery with canvas because it is a technical art with clean, set, colored threads that can transform each other depending on their interactions; I wanted to explore the process of creating fluidity and variability with a defined linear medium.

The use of embroidery allowed me to explore composition and color in new and interesting ways. First, the design “theme” of this series was radial symmetry; each of the circles within the compositions is supposed illustrate this principle, while the stretched canvases are freeform. Also through this series I have explored the design principle of economy as each piece focuses greatly on the element of line. I did not vary the thickness of my thread and so I did incorporate some weaving and layering techniques in order to vary line quality and incorporate different colors together. This strategy also allowed me to explore the concept of color identity; depending on the interaction of the threads their colors would become more toned or saturated, understated or emphasized, or perhaps alter the color all together. Similarly, each color would relate differently with the painted canvas.
