Ladders are associated with spiritual ascent and ambition, while failure can be described as not accomplishing a goal: being unable to ascend. 
This sculpture is a reflection about a story my grandmother once told me when I was a child: when people die, Jesus appears in a plane carrying a rope ladder that can be used to climb to paradise. Sinners, however, fail to climb the ladder.
