I have been working on a series of oil paintings of these in a style influenced by the Group of Seven painters but have paused to explore the ideas as digital studies. So, I created these full color digital works as a guide and they are now evolving into a finished digital series in their own right. There is something so Michigan about these clouds that I was looking to capture.

There is something so Michigan about these clouds that I was looking to capture in this first color study. The horizontal rhythm and repetition of the clouds as they march across the sky evoke late summer and the arrival of cool clear weather.

The thundercloud is based on a photo I took in May looking down my driveway, but the drama in the sky needed a more worthy counterpart to become a painting so Sleeping Bear Dunes seemed like a poetic pairing. Its all about the the dance of shapes.
