Transforming Medical App UI with a New Design Approach

The Client

Smartmedics, a healthtech startup developing a hospital-grade mobile ECG diagnostic system, approached us with a challenge to revamp the UI design of SmartMedicsECG, a smartphone app to control its wireless electrocardiograph. Facing a tight deadline, we developed visual concepts for three interfaces for the iOS platform, maximising accessibility for two distinct user audiences.

The Challenge

We had to craft a universal, clear visual approach to cater to the needs of patients and medical professionals alike. The challenge was to create an environment that felt less like a medical facility and more like a supportive health tool—comforting for elderly patients yet precise for doctors.

With two distinct design concepts adhering to existing UX wireframes—one following the existing brand guidelines and another exploring a more creative detour—we needed to showcase our flexibility and speed without compromising on quality.

Execution

We ensured that all visual elements were large enough to be easily interacted with, and that colour contrasts were sharp enough to aid those with visual impairments. Our new visual solutions introduced a fresh, modern aesthetic that balanced medical professionalism with a more approachable, less clinical feel. We also refined the visuals for both light and dark modes. The client later used them to enhance the app design further.
