Groovy Grapefruit Pop Can Design
Personal Project
Background
I designed this pop can label for a class. The purpose was to show our Illustrator skills, but I also learned about an integral part of the design process along the way.
Creative Inspiration
The concept for the name “Glitter Pop” was to play on the double meaning of “pop” to refer to both the drink and the genre of music. Glitter alludes to the fizziness of the drink, as well as the glamour often associated with pop music.
Process
I am a very visual thinker and often imagine the general look and feel of a design before I start using any tools to create it. But in this case, my initial design was limited to a cluster of colours I liked and a wordmark that could align the words “glitter” and “pop”. It was not hitting the mark and, after an existential rest on the library floor, I ended up scrapping it and starting again.
The second time around, I had a stronger visual idea, thanks to my Pinterest mood board of mid century illustrative design. On top of a concept and a name, I needed a theme to anchor my design.
Learnings
Through this assignment, I learned how important it is to have a mood board and to look around for aesthetic inspiration. Once I had a theme to anchor my design, I was able to pull everything together quickly. I learned that a smoother design process needs to include a period of processing the style and theme for the actual application and creation to come more easily.
Anecdotes & unique touches
Being a sustainability oriented designer, I wanted to design the branding to be made locally (thus "Made in Canada) and added a B Corp certification. I also modified the typeface and design of the barcode, recycle symbol, and nutritional facts to match the theme.
