Art Noveau Style Editorial Project
The goal of this project was to create three editorial spot illustrations for the article "Why Gaming is Now for Adults and Art Lovers." The illustrations must follow a common theme and work like a series whilst being standalone illustrations themselves. The final pieces were done entirely in Adobe Illustrator.
Below are my initial ideas and sketches for the project:
Then, the final layout sketch which would then be used to build the final pieces with:
These illustrations were heavily inspired by the Art Nouveau Movement. These ones in particular were based on Alphonse Mucha’s commercial posters and paintings in the early 1900s.
The color palette was straight out of Mucha’s famous art nouveau paintings, and consisted mostly of earthy tones like muted browns, yellows, and greens. I took advantage of this more de-saturated palette to really make the modern gaming elements pop out of the picture. I made the gaming elements way more saturated compared to the rest of the painting to make them jump out the poster. I also tried to push their temperatures apart from the portraits to really separate them from the subjects of the painting. So, for instance, I pushed the VR headsets towards the cools to counter the warm skin tones of Mona Lisa. The same also goes for the Lady with the Ermine on the right.
