Artist Statement:
My theme is “Bonds”, specifically, bonds between people. I am trying to show how bonds are tough yet fragile, and even if the person is someone very close to you, if you do not care for the bond, it would break apart.

I used five hands to represent the bond between one and four other people. Each hand is made of many smaller hands or parts of hands. This is to show that the bond I am portraying could belong to anyone, the many individuals, in this world.

I chose to use red strings to represent the bond because in the Chinese culture, a red string is used to connect two people fated to be together, in marriage. Also, another saying for strings is “bonds”. Even though the bond I am speaking of is not only about marriage, but also about friendship, rivalry, enemies, and any other sort of relationship you are able to think of, I think it is relevant as it is also fate that allows people to know one another.

The red string connecting one of the hands to another hand is shown breaking apart and falling off. This is depicted by using plastic, bits of cut up plastic, as plastic is the closest thing to glass in terms of transparency, look and maybe feel. The breaking of the string starts from the bottom of the wrist, this is to show the toughness and fragility of the “bond”.

I used white for the background, as bonds are too multi-coloured, so the people themselves would be adding the colour of the bond. So, the white is like a blank piece of paper waiting for people to draw or paint colours onto it, just like bonds, when it is fresh, it is pure, but over time, many other colours would be added onto it.
