SOCIALLY DISTANT - Interactive Light Installation
by Luke McConnell & Simon Nicholls
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we interacted with others, bringing with it new terms, like ‘self-isolating’, ‘social distancing’, and ‘flattening the curve’.
This interactive installation playfully recreates the experience of social distancing, offering a reflection on the conflicting desires to be close to others while also maintaining a safe distance.
The light sculpture, a mesmerising orb of light and sound, beckons you with its mysterious allure. As you draw nearer, the light subtly exhibits signs of apprehension, while its gentle, ambient melody evolves, intensifying in response to your proximity. Venture too close, and the orb dims its radiance and silences its tune, retreating into the shadows. Unlike conventional light sculptures, ‘Socially Distant’ challenges observers to explore the intricate interplay between closeness and distance.
To fully savour its charm, one must embrace the concept of 'breathing room,' allowing moments of reflection on the profound shifts our world has undergone.
This interactive light and sound sculpture was developed by design lecturers Luke McConnell and Simon Nicholls. McConnell teaches in the School of Media Arts, Wintec | Te Pūkenga, while Nicholls teaches at Media Design School in Auckland.
