Sotheby’s x Modigliani
Amedeo Modigliani is a legend in 20th century art history. An embodiment of a brilliant yet tragic artist, he passed away at a young age of thirty-five. Among the last and largest paintings created by Modigliani before his death on 24 January 1920, the portrait of Paulette Jourdain is an exceptional example of the artist’s mature work. Sothebys needs a film for this meaningful portrait, hoping that the film can not only showcasing the beauty of the painting itself, but also telling the story behind the painting.
Our Solution
“I am his last model, his last brushstroke” – Paulette Jourdain. When conduct research on the painting, we found a little-known French television documentary in 1991, where the elderly Paulette Jourdain recalled with great clarity the circumstances surrounding the creation. We got inspired from this interview, then wrote a VoiceOver capturing Modigliani’s state of mind when creating this artwork. The visuals in the film revolve around the theme of “Modigliani burning his life to create.” At the end of the film, we also include Paulette Jourdain’s narration, providing a fresh perspective on the painting and further enhancing the story behind it.
