INITIAL SKETCHES

I started by exploring different ways hero character for the box. I started by trying to see how I could execute the feel of a character across a range of materials and play styles since the base kit for Super Chewers Box has many "tailor buckets" based off various dogs needs and play styles. In the end I landed on a a hardcore Tug option shown on the below images upper right as well as a nylon on nylon over molded version seen on the upper left.

INITIAL CAD + 3D PRINTS

After a few rounds of edits back and fourth with the factory we landed in a solid place. We had hashed out the over all visuals opting to flip the face position to help with the character read over all. We also fine tuned the internals to allow for an optimal passthrough hole as well as a area of a "bite mark" color break. 3D prints of each size we then requested to further inspect both the design over all as well as, in person sizing of the products.

FINAL DETAILS

The final details I looked our was how we could really make this item pop and give a elevated premium feel to it as a "ATB" (Add To Box) toy. This is typically a higher price point toy that people need to buy into and add it into there existing box subscription. I landed on adding some gloss accents on key details of the toy.

SAMPLE MOLD LEARNINGS

A lot was learned from the sample mold. First thing we learned was the over-molded nylon was becoming to hot in the manufacturing process causing it to burn on the inside around the through hole. Also we learned that since the nylon was so hard it became very brittle so we added a flexabilizer to the nylon mix to help with that. Also in testing the glossiness of the bone portion of the toy make the dogs teeth slide more so it was harder for them to chew on the toy as it was intended. For final production I removed the gloss finish from the bone portion.
