Crafting Hope: Foundation Awards 2023

CRAFTING HOPE
Shaping the future of healthcare in South Africa

Set up in 2006, the Discovery Foundation is an independent trust that aims to distribute R300 million in grants to train and support 600 medical specialists and institutions by 2026.

The Discovery Foundation Awards honour and reward excellence in our country’s healthcare sector. Award recipients receive grants in the form of scholarships, bursaries, research fellowships, and support for teaching and research institutions. By supporting the training of specialists for rural areas and the development of academic medicine and research centres, the Discovery Foundation hopes to increase the number of sub-specialists available to adequately meet the country’s healthcare needs.

The Brief
Discovery is hosting the 2022/2023 Discovery Foundation Awards and Alumni conference. We need to develop a special concept that creates positive sentiment in challenging times. This should speak to the impact of the Discovery Foundation and doctors on the country and the healthcare sector. This should have an inspiring and motivational tone.

Concept Explanation
The Japanese art of putting pottery pieces back together with gold. This is often used to persevere ancient pottery pieces. It is built on the idea that in embracing imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art.

As a philosophy Kinstugi relates to treating breakage of historical pieces with gold-mixed lacquer in order to embrace the imperfect and contain the beauty of history. Exceptional strain has been placed on our healthcare system and healthcare workers, we now enter a phase of rebuilding and paving a way for a better future for our healthcare system for all.

Consider this as a golden joinery of recognising the inherent value of what we have here in South Africa, and together, through the Discovery Fund, the Discovery Foundation we help to contribute towards building a better healthcare system through support, connection and collaboration.

Through Kintsugi we are Crafting Hope, thank you to all our recipients for your dedication to building a better future for us all.

Showcased below are sample photos and details of the printed book in combination with exacted pages of the digital and interactive PDF.
