Fighting for dynamic range

My DSLR is a 9-year old camera. After so many years it feels like an old trusted friend. However there is one thing I hate: its dynamic range capability. Everytime I have the luck to shoot a nice sunset in a nice spot I know there is no way around heavy editing in Lightroom if I want to get something close to the beauty of the original scene.

This is a typical result, straight out of camera:
After some Lightroom magic I got quite close to what I had in mind when shooting the picture.
I guess with just some more work to fix the white balance and the overall contrast I could have called the day. Instead of just doing this I decided to go to Photoshop and remove the people, street lamps, walls, flares, and nearby houses. They seemed to be nothing more than a distraction, not contributing to the overall feeling.

And this gave me the perfect opportunity to test the improvements made to Content-Aware technology. Managed to remove most of them by just using the Patch tool.

This is the final image. I think it looks OK for screen.
