The Story: sodium vapor

The Story
The first album Andy Faunch released in 2021—sodium vapor—took about a year to complete (I recall working on guitar parts for it in the middle of lockdown in the spring of 2020, and he released the album in February of 2021). It was an enormous complex concept album to carry off (in my mind, at the least), and we wanted to do something that reached back while also pointing forward for the cover art. Andy provided several old photographs he'd shot in the early 1980s that I worked with for the front and back covers and inner sleeve designs for his printed CDs (all of the art I have done for Andy’s projects have been full CD packages, not just the lone front cover art shown here).

The photo selected for the front cover was a long exposure Andy shot with his 35 mm SLR somewhere along the Sixth Avenue corridor, just north of downtown San Diego, where our band lived in 1981, in the Ambulant House at 3641 Sixth Ave (our band was called Some Ambulants—you can see/listen/read about that band from 1981 here).

The picture has ghost-like images of me and Andy in it, showing up hazily behind the ‘a’ and ‘u’ in the well-used Trebuchet MS faunch logo on the cover. It was cool to use a 40+ year old picture in this release that came out in 2021.

And it was the last time we used Trebuchet MS as the featured logo font.
